What is ScholarSkills Junior?
ScholarSkills Junior is a combination of math and reading comprehension courses designed to give young students strong foundations for higher grades in school and for top scores on important tests.

What grade levels can participate in ScholarSkills Junior?
ScholarSkills Junior is designed for students in grades K-4.

What exactly will students be learning in ScholarSkills Junior?
Students will be learning Foundations for Excellence in Reading and Math.

Overview of our ELA Course:
Sentence comprehension is the key to reading comprehension.  If students can understand how sentences are created and connected, then they will be able to recognize those patterns in their readings, and re-create those patterns in their writing. Our ELA course is called Sentence-Smart because it focuses on comprehension at the sentence level.   Students will learn the grammar and vocabulary they need to understand everything they read. Grammar is important because it teaches students how words are organized to create meaning.  Vocabulary is important because it helps students to understand the meanings of words.

So in our ELA course, students will learn how writers use the parts of speech to create sentences and paragraphs. Then the students will use their knowledge of sentence comprehension and sentence construction to improve their reading comprehension and writing ability.  This program is a Visual, Interactive, Thoughtful, Associative, Learning experience: students work with physical color-coded sentence parts that allow them to actually take sentences apart to analyze how each word or groups of words are organized to create meaning.  Sentence-Smart makes grammar and vocabulary exciting and effective for students.

How is this program different from other math programs?
Students receive personalized instruction with physical models which helps them to discover the principles of math for themselves. Whatever students discover, they remember. This is not the old fashioned chalk and talk approach where students get told what to do, write, and think.  This is guided discovery that leads to mastery.  Math actually starts making sense to students. They work from understanding instead of just rote rules.
This program is Visual, Interactive, Thoughtful, Associative, Learning because it incorporates physical tools that students can use to build mathematical concepts. Math Builders teaches foundations in a way that gets students excited about learning math. When learning is exciting, it also becomes unforgettable.

Competency Based Learning is the key to every child’s success
Competency based learning simply means that each child gets an opportunity to work at his or her own pace until he or she achieves mastery in each subject area or skill level. This approach creates confidence in children, and confidence is the key to excellence in every subject area.

When does the ScholarSkills Junior Program begin?
The program begins on July 5th and ends on August 25th.
Scholarskills is open Monday to Friday from 1 pm to 6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 1pm

When do students attend?
Students should attend for at least two sessions per week on any day from Monday to Saturday.  Each session consists of 30 minutes of ELA or 30 minutes of Math. Parents can also choose to use both sessions for math or for ELA.  Parents may also have students take 30 minutes of ELA and 30 minutes of math on the same day with a five minute break between each section. Remember that the 30 minutes consists of intensive hands on study for mastery learning.
Please note that students may be rescheduled based on course availability on various days.
