Welcome to the NYC Vocabulary Bee™ Sponsored by
Scholarskills Learning Center™
“Getting Students Excited about becoming Word Smart through Words Parts©”
Schools and students can earn up to $1,500 in corporate sponsored prizes.
Every student will learn how to use vocabulary to improve their reading, writing, and reasoning skills, and some students will win up to $500 in essential supplies for their schools and $100 Amazon gift certificates for themselves.
Rationale
Our goal is to give students a dynamic, interactive way to learn--and to keep learning--new vocabulary words. With an expanded vocabulary, students can improve their reading, reasoning, and writing skills and get better grades in school and top scores on tests.
Methodology
Word analysis is one of the finest ways for students to acquire new vocabulary words. Our program focuses on helping students to master the Latin and Greek affixes and roots that account for nearly 100,000 words in English. This approach will help them to decode most of the new words that they encounter in academic texts and other readings. Every exercise promotes learning through thinking and mastery through practice.
Preparation
Students will prepare for the NYC Vocabulary Bee™ by studying and completing the intensive Word Builders Curriculum which contains the specific roots, affixes, and lists of derivative words that they will be tested on. The Word Builders Curriculum utilizes interactive digital and print resources to help students learn new words for lifelong excellence as they prepare for the Vocabulary Bee. Preparatory quizzes can be printed or taken online. Since words and questions will be taken directly from the Word Builders Curriculum, students will be rewarded for intensive studying.
Word Builders™ Curriculum
This program consists of three parts:
Part I: Prefix-Smart ©
Part II: Root-Smart©
Part III: Word Builders 101 (Prefix-Smart and Root-Smart combined in 101 Words Every Student Should Know)
Prefix-Smart introduces students to the most important prefixes.
Root-Smart introduces students to the Latin and Greek roots
and other essential prefixes and suffixes
which account for thousands of English derivatives.
Each Prefix-Smart© and Root Smart Unit contains the following:
Color-coded, numbered word part cards which students can use to assemble--and disassemble--words by using roots, prefixes, and bases. These cards are at the heart of this program. They allow teachers and students to use color-coded word parts (and the accompanying worksheets) as tools to create any number and variety of words. Students actually get to “build” words and to see the words as they are being “created” from their parts. Word Builder Cards provide an easy, exciting, interactive way for students to learn how words are made, and they give them a systematic reference for decoding other words that are made from these parts. Instructors can use these word-builders in any number of imaginative ways as warm-up activities or as entire lessons.
Word Builders includes Inductive Learning Activities which students can use independently and with guided instruction. These interactive worksheets are accompanied by online instructional videos and exercises. They include Smart-Charts of Latin word-parts which students can use with several prefixes to “create” words. Some of these roots and bases have italicized word-parts which show how they would appear in English derivatives.
How can your students participate in the NYC Vocabulary Bee?
Schools can enroll teams of 5 students in each division. There are two divisions: ScholarSkills Junior (grades 3-4) and ScholarSkills Intermediate (grades 5-8).
We help schools to host Word Assemblies and Vocabulary Challenges which can get the entire school up for the challenge. Schools will score points and win together by using online resources. Then each school will select two teams of five representatives for each division. These school representatives will carry their school’s torch into the face to face school to school competitions that are held three times over the next 10 months. Schools can host their own school wide Vocabulary Bee to determine who the best representatives are.
What are the rules of competition?
The Vocabulary Bee consists of three rounds which leads to a winner at the end of the third round. Rounds are held from October 15th to December 15th; January 15th to March 15th; and May 15th to June 15th. Winners are announced on June 16th.
Each round consists of written and verbal testing on the specific lists of word parts and words in the Word Builders Curriculum. The final round consists of face-face to face team to team competition as students from different schools compete in several over several rounds to earn the highest scores.
School Teams score points in each face to face round and keep those points until the final round. Teams can keep improving their points total between rounds by scoring well on bimonthly quizzes which are distributed to schools to be downloaded and printed by teachers. Virtual challenges can also be held via go to meeting and other multi-video conferencing tools. Schools can also score points by getting as many students as possible to enroll in our online resources such as vocabulary.com
The winning team and the winning school are both rewarded. Each student on the winning team gets a certificate of excellence, a medal, and a $50 amazon gift card. The winning team’s school gets $500 in Staples gift cards for the purchase of school supplies, or each school can create a wishlist of resources that the school needs up to $500 and a corporate check will be disbursed to meet those needs.
